Service Instructions for Ice-Control type DHB 350Image

Frost detector for Eltrace  heating tapes

Function

Ice-Control is an electronic system for adjusting Domotec heating tape for gutters and downpipes.
Ice detector
The ice detector only turns the heating tape on when the temperature approaches freezing point (£ 3°C) and in the presence of melting water.  When the humidity probe stops the operation of the heating tape, an additional operating time adjustable between 00 and 120 minutes is provided for.
Starting current limiter
Current consumption by the heating tape depends essentially on the ambient temperature.  When the tape is cold, in order not to draw excessively on the network, DHB 350 limits the starting current for 8 minutes after each start, as long as this function has been activated (default adjustment).  The regulator then operates normally.

Technical data

  • Starting temperature  + 3°C
  • Engagement differential  ± 0.5K
  • Additional operating time adjustable from 00 to 120 min.
  • Operating voltage  230 V~ + 10 to - 15%
  • Network frequency  50 Hz
  • Breaking capacity  13 A
  • Consumption  5 VA
  • Protection class  IP 20
  • Permissible ambient temperature
  • (regulator)  - 10 to + 50°C
  • Maximum tape length  1)
  • Temperature probe type  NTC
  • Length of probe cable  5 m
  • Maximum length of probe
  • dia. 1 mm²  50 m 2)
  • Permissible ambient temperature
Probe assembly  To install the temperature probe, it is preferable to begin at the North, choosing an area without any direct exposure to sunlight.  The humidity probe will be placed at the lowest point of the gutter near the downpipe.  For larger installations, gutters will be better protected if several sectors are used, each including an ice detector.

Display

The display indicates the setpoint values and the effective values, whereas the small LEDs indicate the functions to which they refer.
Function LED
$ = Heating tape active = LED on
Starting current limiter active = LED flashing
$ = Additional operating time of heating tapes
$ = Active humidity probe
°C = Outside temperature
In service, the display indicates the measured temperature

Adjustments:

Programming of setpoint values
Hold the "mode" button down and briefly press, during the following second, the "set" button.  The display will flash.  The equipment is ready for programming.  To modify the setpoint values, press briefly the "set" button as many times as needed.  By holding the "set" button down slightly longer, the figures will scroll through faster.

¯ Hold the "mode" button and, during the second that follows, press briefly the "set" button.
Additional operating time adjustment range, LED $ is on
® Press the "set" button until the desired time is displayed.
(Default value = 15 min.; changes in 5 minute steps)
¯ Press briefly the "mode" button.

ESR-20-BO: active start current limiter = 80 m/13(10)A
ESR-20-BO: inactive start current limiter = 40 m/10A
2) For lengths of more than 25 m, choose a shielded cable.

Electrical connection

The performance of all the connection and maintenance work shall be entrusted exclusively to an authorized electrician.
Before working on live equipment, be sure to disconnect the equipment from the mains.

Connection to mains by terminals L1, N and grounding, heating tape to terminals NN, LL and ground; temperature probe to terminals TT, humidity probe to terminals FF (possible shielding at ground terminals).  In this case, bridge the upper and lower ground terminals.

Starting current limiter, the $ LED flashes
Recording of programmed setpoint values

Simultaneously press the "mode" and "set" buttons until this display indicated (---).
If none of the buttons is pressed for 3 min., the programming mode will be abandoned automatically and none of the values recorded!

Modification of setpoint values

See "Programming of setpoint values" above.

Operating tests

To proceed with these tests, it is possible to start the heating tape manually.  Press the "set" button for 2 seconds.  The heating tape is then activated.  The indicator light shows tESt and the $ LED flashes for the time the starting current limiter is operating.  Then the LED $ remains on.  By pressing the "set" button again, the heating tape is deactivated.
If the manual mode is not canceled, the system returns to the normal programmed mode on its own after 15 minutes.

Error message

E1 = Temperature probe failure (interruption / short-circuit).  For safety reasons, the equipment switches to the permanent operating mode!  The humidity probe is engaged automatically.
E2 = Failure of humidity probe (interruption).  When the effective temperature is less than the setpoint value, the regulator switches to permanent operation.
Humidity probe failure (short-circuit)
In the event of a failure of this type, the operation of the ice detector is impossible.

Operating guarantee / Civil responsibility

Eltrace declines any responsibility in the event of heating tape from other origins being used.
